Tree Houses! From the past into the future...

In the future, will we give back the land to native plants and animals and live up in the trees? Hovering aircraft are available now, we just need to wait for the clean energy versions. If we compost our waste, give up plastics and petroleum, grow hydrophonically...what would our new footprint be?

treehouse costa rica
Treehouse, Costa Rica
If you are ready to live up in the trees full time, this planned, modern, sustainable treehouse community on 600+ acres of secondary rainforest and reclaimed pasture looks like a nice place. Perched overlooking the Golfo Dulce in Costa Rica and nurtured by two whitewater rivers, the land pulses with life. The ziplines are optional.

Fab Tree Hab

Mass Institute of Technology

Live in a tree, not up in a tree...the tree grows in place 'as' the housing structure, instead of the growing, felling and transporting of lumber. A living structure is grafted into shape with prefabricated reusable scaffolds. A roof-top trough harvests water for human use; the plumbing system is positioned to provide for gravity-induced flow and gray-water reuse; a composting system treats human waste and will later return nutrients to the eco-system.

Finca Bellavista is a residential treehouse community in the south Pacific coastal region of Costa Rica. It is a rustic, yet comfortable, private retreat off the beaten path where owners and a limited number of guests can explore the natural wonders of the rainforest canopy and enjoy what they call ‘treetop Pura Vida’. Will build a treehouse to suit.

What a great diversity of tree houses! I'll run out and buy the book. I favor the more traditional appearance, forgetting the use of steel or aluminum, and have a house underway. Thy say trees make good neghbors - perhaps not in ths instance.

I live in San Diego, and would LOVE to have a tree house of my own. I don't own a home, and NEVER would, in S.D. . If I ever have the opportunity to buy or build one, I would have it somewhere in Oregon or Washington state. WEST COAST ONLY!!!!!!

While I'm.grateful to enjoy these photos I do have a complaint after looking at many treehouse photos,on the,web..especially you tube : wouldn't it be nice to see the interiors of mist of these treehouses..majority of them dont show the I the only one frustrated by this ? I find it somewhat aggravating.

Matscape? No no no no no no no
  • Gabions
Gabion (from Italian gabbia "big" and Latin cavea meaning "cage") a wire cage that is filled with stone or other hard materials.
  • Shell Bathrooms
Cover your bathroom walls with shells!
  • Shell Fireplaces
Options are to glue gun the shells on top or mortar the shells into a surface thinset.
  • Shell Buildings
Waterproof, strong and long lasting. We have been decorating our homes with shells for thousands of years...
  • Shell Walls
Shell encrusted walls were all the rage in the 1700s...and there seems to be a resurgence.
  • Straw Bale Greenhouses
With a minimum R value of 38, straw bale is always a great choice for at least one wall in a cold climate greenhouse.
  • Shed of the Year
Each year in the UK there is a Shed of the Year Contest.
  • Klinker Brick
Klinker or clinker bricks were overcooked rejects, a product of intense and smokey coal-fired kilns. They were considered a waste product until early Craftsman builders found their sculptural architectural merits.
  • Mirrored Buildings
Beautiful buildings but the thought of birds flying into the glass is dreadful, so all large panes of mirror should have a deterrent, like a hawk cut-out or strips of ribbon hanging in front. Nesting season would be a particularly problematic time.
  • Bark Shingles
No maintenance, long lasting, impenetrable poplar bark siding is a cradle to cradle siding option.
  • Bark Walls
Bark Walls. Bark is waterproof and will not rot; its familiar surface is richly graphic.
  • Corrugated Metal Ideas
Reclaimed corrugated metal is the most earth friendly option.
  • Savin Couelle
Architect-sculptor Savin is the son of self-taught organic architect Jacques Couëlle.
  • Recommissioned Silos
Recommissioning local silos is an eco-friendly housing option.
  • Salvaged Wood Interior Walls
    Salvaged wood paneling inspiration...
  • Salvaged Wood Bathrooms
Reclaimed wood works well in bathrooms. Either as paneling, backspashes, vanity, flooring or ceiling.
  • Salvaged Wood Sheds
If you do not have enough salvaged wood to build a cabin. Build a salvaged wood shed.
  • Salvaged Wood Cabins
Old wood from barns, farmhouses, factories, even snow fence, is potential siding for a new home.
  • Homes on Stilts
A rising sea level and hurricane-resistant design choice.
  • Boathouses
Boathouses have been around almost as long as boats.
