DEET in our Waterways

The Minnesota Department of Health has placed DEET on the top spot on its list of "chemicals of emerging concern" and will conduct numerous tests this year. The main objective of the research will be to calculate a "safe" level of exposure. Although DEET has been okayed for clothes and skin (in moderation) it has never been meant for consumption. But with its increasing popularity and abundant usage it is showing up in ever greater quantities in our rivers, streams and lakes and it is only a matter of time before it shows up in our drinking water as well.

A Sampling of Environmental Charges Against Koch:

September 2000, a federal grand jury in Corpus Christi, Texas returned a 97-count indictment against Koch Industries Inc., Koch Petroleum Group for violating federal clean air and hazardous waste laws, due to the release of at least 91 metric tons of uncontrolled, untreated carcinogenic benzene. In April 2001, the company reached a $20 million settlement in exchange for admitting to covering up environmental violations at its refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas. www.justice.gov

March 2000, Koch petroleum which operates a refinery in Rosemount, Minn., was sentenced to pay a $6 million criminal fine and pay an additional $2 million in remediation costs. This is the largest federal environmental fine ever paid in Minnesota. Koch admitted that it negligently discharged 200,000 - 600,000 gallons of aviation fuel into a wetland and an adjoining waterway. In addition, their way of recovering the fuel (a year and a half later) destroyed a portion of the surrounding ecosystem and wildlife habitat. In a separate offense, Koch dumped a million gallons of wastewater with high ammonia content on the ground between November 1996 and March 1997 and also increased its flow of wastewater into the Mississippi River on weekends when no one monitored discharges. These actions allowed Koch to circumvent the weekly monitoring and reporting requirements of its wastewater discharge permit. The case was investigated by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division, the FBI and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and was prosecuted by the U. S. Attorney's Office for the District of Minnesota. www.ehso.com

Koch's Sterling butane pipeline had a leak in Lively, Texas, on August 24, 1996. Two teenagers on the way to report the leak drove into the unseen butane cloud, and were killed when the gas exploded and burned. The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that severe external pipeline corrosion was the cause of the failure. www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries

In 1999
, a federal jury found that Koch Industries had stolen oil from government and American Indian lands and had lied about its purchases more than 24,000 times. In May 2001, Koch Industries paid $25 million to the federal government to settle the federal lawsuit that found the company had improperly taken more oil than it had paid for from federal and Indian land. www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries

In January 2000, Koch Pipeline, agreed to a $35 million settlement with the U.S. Justice Department and the State of Texas as fines for the firm's three hundred oil spills (300 million gallons) in Texas and five other states going back to 1990. www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries

In 2006, Flint Hill Resources was fined nearly $16,000 by the EPA for 10 separate violations of the Clean Air Act at its Alaska oil refinery facilities, and required to spend another $60,000 on safety equipment needed to help prevent future violations. yosemite.epa.gov

Climate Change Denial:

A March 2010 Greenpeace report shows that Koch Industry foundations have contributed (2005-2008) nearly $25 million to organizations that oppose clean energy and climate policy. That does not include oil and gas lobbying of $37.9 million. For more info on Koch Industries' funding of Climate Denial Groups -- See GreenPeace's report "Koch Industries Funding the Climate Denial Machine" www.greenpeace.org

In the August, 2010 New York Magazine article 'Covert Operations,' oil tycoon David Koch was quoted as saying, global warming will be a good thing for the planet and will help "support enormously more people because a far greater land area will be available to produce food." www.newyorker.com

Revenue:

Koch Industries currently brings in $100 billion in revenue annually.
Each brother is personally worth $21.5 billion. Together 43 billion.*
Koch Industries spent a total of $37.9 million on oil and gas lobbying
from January 2006 to December 2009. www.sourcewatch.org

Voting:

Since the Citizen's United decision, corporations can now attempt to influence their employees' votes. The Koch Brothers jumped on that band wagon right away and mailed out lists of Koch supported candidates to their 50,000 employees during the last election. See info and a copy of a recommended election packet at www.thenation.com

The Mercatus Center is a conservative Think Tank at George Mason University’s Arlington campus. It is a university-based research center that makes its research findings available to the media and public policy makers. According to GreenPeace the Mercatus Center has received over 10 million dollars worth of funding from the Koch Brothers. Mercatus also fights environmental regulation, opposes clean energy legislation and lobbys to prevent curbs on industrial pollution. www.greenpeace.org  mercatus.org

I was wondering if anyone was making a stand against the crazy environmental regulators who are destroying our society. Thanks for the info so I can help support their fight for reason by buying their products. I pray folks like Al Gore, etc are forced to answer for their actions, rather than letting them get by with non-answering insults, snobbery, and evasion of evidence they want to deny and bury. We need to use American coal, shale, oil drilling, and keep working to find economical new technology that makes Saudi oil worthless.

These brothers need more national exposure as to their quest for control of America under their silent dictatorship. Why is this not being discussed everyday on national TV? We must never allow our great country to fall into the hands of this kind of enemy.

These big money monopolists and oligarchs are destroying our country and want to kill our democracy by buying it, and thanks to their buddies on the court they are in the position to do just that. The demise of democracy will come at the hand of the poor people who are hoodwinked by these fat b*st*rds who push their hot buttons of racism, sexism, and God. Too many of the rational, thinking folks have concluded that Obama cannot get us out of this slump, forgetting that the Reps of the Koch Bros. in Congress have had one single-minded goal - defeat Obama, block everything he wants to accomplish. We need to realize that the Reps are the cause of our failure to recover from the effects of their policies, not the solution. We need to show the T baggers what a real populist movement looks like.

Reply #257 on : Tue September 06, 2011, 22:50:13
If we, as Americans, don't gain our voice I truly fear for the survival of the United States. The Kochs' have decided that they and a few of their close friends including Gov. Perry can buy the White House, and take us back to a time when those of us of color "knew our place". Their opinion is, How dare a man of color run and win the presidency! Wake up people, we need to hit the streets in force and boycott any and all products produced by the Kochs' companies. Hatred and racism is becoming unbearable in the United States and those who continue to "bait the bear" will find that people aren't stupid and they will finally rise up and stamp these "midget" men out. Congress has allowed them and others of their ilk too much power.

Koch Bros - The Real Terrorists
Reply #253 on : Mon August 29, 2011, 00:22:29
I am happy to see that I have only purchased the Vanity napkins in my lifetime, but you can be sure I never will again.
Shame on you Tea Partiers - are you so naive that you do not see how you are being used by these Bros. in trying to eliminate all the protections that were put in place to protect all of us, you included? The Bros. only want you to help them do more destruction but at a cheaper price for them. Do you not need clean water and air to survive like all of humanity? Don't you care about your children & their children and the future you may be giving them to inherit? You & I are lucky to be able to enjoy some beauty in our country, but if you allow people like the Bros. to eliminate all the protective agencies created for our good, then the future heirs will surely condemn & damn us for our lack of foresight & caring. All you have to do is look at the destitute poorer countries and see what the USA's future can be if you allow people like the Koch Bros to have their way.
Do you union Republicans really think they care about you & your concerns? Wake up and smell the coffee folks. First, we had Mr. Bush & his cronies create this God awful mess during his 8 years. It's going to take longer than a year or two to fix it and Barack Obama did not create it - he inherited it. Oh by the way, I'm a white 71 yr old female independent voter.
Have any of you tried to live without an income and pay your bills? That's what the Republicans expect when they do not allow taxes to be collected. Us poor & middle class folks can't carry the load alone anymore - we have given and don't have any more to give - but you know what - we will find a way to give more just like we always do. So it's time for the wealthy to start paying their way.
It really is a shame that there aren't more people like Bill & Melinda Gates who share their wealth. The Koch Bros. sure have enough to give up some and do some good - but they only seem to look to find a way to destroy the good around us. I hope & pray that enough people see the evil behind these 2 men and help curb their works. If we can hurt their profit line - good for you and good for us.

If the money they are hoarding while feeding you a line of bull doesn't matter to you, How about what they are doing to the planet.

They have 56 other plants around the US. putting millions in danger. And they wrote the bill for reducing regulations on business.

I suggest you check PRwatch.org and READ. Click on the data sheet and see if anyone you LOVE is in danger.

Just Google Koch Industries and read about the damage they have done already. They also want approval to run pipe from Canada to Texas. With this kind of disregard for the planet and the people, I for one pray our government doesn't approve it.

*
Open and free you’ll never be,
your fate is up to me.
Need some time to comprehend,
just sit back and I’ll begin.
Time consumed by your inner desire,
forgot about those who built your empires.
Caught up in the world of greed,
can’t even see what you’ve done to me.
Violent and cruel to those around you,
your heart beats with no values.
One down several more to follow,
let me know if this is to hard to swallow.
*
Unmoral unkind,
you can’t go and rewind.
Careless and selfish that’s how I found out,
you’re a savage killer inside and out.
Blinded by what you’ve done,
It’s time to pray to the other one.
Unnatural empty shell,
It’s time to go back to hell.
Torn apart from within,
open up renounce your sin.
Two revelations mixed.
let me know if you need a fix.
*
Be afraid of this power,
as if flows within this hour.
A sinners heart is my prey,
only to torment in a different way.
Unable to grasp,
take a drink, pour a glass.
Fell the pain in your mind,
let it go, come unwind.
You had a chance to break free,
now your soul is condemned by me.
Unfortunately you can’t escape your soulless fate,
open and free you’ll never be.

Thank you for listing the products that the Koch brothers are involved in making. Now we can buy their products on purpose instead of by chance. It's hilarious how the lefties who hate the Koch brothers have no problem with Warren Buffet(who can raise his own taxes any time he wants to, but won't, in spite of shooting off his big mouth about other people's taxes) and George Soros with his billions funneled into lefty causes, union thug causes, UN(puke)causes, Osama Obama causes, etc. Meanwhile the Koch brothers actually make things that people want to buy, without being forced to by the bloated government. Oh no. We can't have that. We must only make things that people don't want, and then force them to pay for them, through subsidies, or government decree. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Enough of their influence behind the Tea Party. As with any typical business, the only way to get through is by hitting their bottom line. Koch brothers do everything based on their bottom line. Whenever possible, by other brands owned by their competitors.

It's relatively easy to know what NOT to buy. Unfortunately, many other corporations are socially irresponsible, too. Here's a partial list of companies you CAN buy products from:

http://www.globalvillageresources.org/shopping.htm

Notice that the list doesn't contain Seventh Generation, which makes paper products, many of which are sold at major grocery chains. What would be really helpful is a list of companies/products that we SHOULD support!

Kock Brothers Influance
Reply #235 on : Sun August 14, 2011, 16:13:41
The Kock Brothers influance on our society proves that when corparations become to large with no laws that control them they begin to control the people.
We had these laws in place from the 1930's to the 1970's now we do not.
We all must get active in our local government, this is were it begins.
We hear talk of the government being the problem, I believe that corporations that are controlling our government is the real problem and will distroy our country.

How do I know if the wood product I purchase has Koch sourced content? How do I know if the can of solvent I buy comes from a Koch plant or refinery?

I can appreciate the list above, but more to the point, what brands of gasoline and diesel do the Koch Brothers provide oil to?

The Koch brothers are tyrants. They use their money to create chaos in America. I will not buy any of the "troublemakers" products and will tell all my friends to do likewise. Its fortunate that both brothers are getting aged and hopefully will not be around much longer on the planet to keep trouble up!

The problem I have with them is that they are very Libritarian. This party want's to cut back every thing that helps people and protect the enviroment and the country. They are trying to bribe the Rebulican leaders to think in that direction so they can increase profits by getting away with polution they create. The industre's they have are make tons of polutants and it hurts profits from treating them properly.

My union

My union has supported republicans occasionally.
The real question is why are so few republican candidates union friendly? Without any advocacy by republicans, corporations would be doing just fine. Clearly unions are under attack...it's never enough for corporations to do well, they must crush every obstacle to them doing even a little better......

Koch brothers and society
Reply #226 on : Sat August 06, 2011, 21:18:44
The Kock brothers are attempting to buy society and influence government with their money. They may employ people, but their personal wealth is an attempt at power to undermine this republic and democracy as we understand it. Our time has come to demonstrate to the Koch industries that this government is of the people, by the people and for the people. Boycott is a start.

Jim, you should be happy you have a job. By the way, you do not have to join the union if you do not want to. This is your choice.

Shame on Democrats
Reply #221 on : Mon August 01, 2011, 19:16:19
Lauren, I am a member of a union and a very active Republican! The Union takes my mony and gives it to many Democrat politicians without my blessing. I have also recorded all of the Koch brands in my phone and will now seek out these products as they put many Americans to work! Can someone please let me know what would be a business you all think we should buy from or is all business bad unless there is zero profit?

Shame on Republicans!

Shame on every Republican politician, businessman, and supporter. Shame...shame....shame. I have recorded all of the Koch product brands into my phone so that I will be sure not to buy any of their products. I have forwarded the list to my business colleagues and they also support this idea. Now, I do not want to hear about one more union worker supporting a single Republican every again....OK?

I am so glad to find a site which lists the products the Koch brothers produce. They seem to have a hand in everything. Really need to know what to avoid. Don't trust them to be ethical

Let's keep in mind where these "great Americans" company began under their father Fred. Fred built more than a dozen oil refineries for Joe Stalin. Fast forward 20 or so years and Fred is a charter member of The John Birch Society.

I don't trust his scheming progeny, nor their 3 dozen front organizations, such as the Cato Institute. Citizens United has given them the cover to increase their nefarious machinations to whatever level they so choose. They cloak themselves in Libertarian jargon, but when it's distilled to its esssence, do you really think that they espouse liberty for the masses? More likely just the plutocrats and their minions wil enjoy the freedom, while the rest of us un-washed rabble will be left to struggle through an increasingly malthusian scenario.
