Helen Nodding's
Moss Gaffiti Recipe

www.storiesfromspace.co.uk

(enough to create several small pieces or 1 large piece of graffiti)

________________________________________________

1 can of beer  (others use yogurt or buttermilk)
1/2 teaspoon sugar
Several clumps garden moss

You will also need a plastic container (with lid),
a blender and a paintbrush
_________________________________________________

To begin the recipe, first of all gather together several clumps of moss (moss can usually be found in moist, shady places) and crumble them into a blender. Then add the beer and sugar and blend just long enough to create a smooth, creamy consistency. Now pour the mixture into a plastic container.

Find a suitable damp and shady wall on to which you can apply your moss milkshake. Paint your chosen design onto the wall (either free-hand or using a stencil). If possible try to return to the area over the following weeks to ensure that the mixture is kept moist. Soon the bits of blended moss should begin to re-couperate into a whole rooted plant – maintaining your chosen design before eventually colonising the whole area. www.storiesfromspace.co.uk

I love the 'edging' on your website with up close pictures of plants, many of them variegated! I am a horticulturalist, who LOVES variegated plants, and would like to know the english (and latin if you have it) names of these great plants. I don't recognize some of them...
Thank You!

moss on canvas
Reply #14 on : Sat September 15, 2012, 21:39:15
Really interesting question.

If moss grows on rocks I would think it would definitely grow on canvas. I think the question is, would a gesso ground prevent the canvas from decaying and becoming moldy on the back. Moss needs a bit of water here and there, so I think a cotton canvas with watered moss on top would last but a couple of years. Canvas with a heavy gesso, maybe a a couple years longer... Only guessing... Sounds like great fun though... maybe masonite or wood would last longer.... Any other opinions out there...please chime in.

So creative and beautiful! Happy Earth Day!
"We cannot segregate the human heart from the environment outside us and say that once one of these is reformed everything will be improved. Man is organic with the world. His inner life moulds the envrionment and is itself also deeply affected by it. The one acts upon the other and every abiding change in the life of man is the result of these mutual reactions..." I want to know how to do it. I've heard that mixing moss with yohurt and painting it on does the trick,
but I haven't had much success.
