Midway Island Albatross

I know these photos by Chris Jordan have been out for a while now. But I just could not face these images until recently. It really is life changing if you do look; and learn the story behind this aberration...
DEET in our Waterways

The Minnesota Department of Health has placed DEET on the top spot on its list of "chemicals of emerging concern" and will conduct numerous tests this year. The main objective of the research will be to calculate a "safe" level of exposure. Although DEET has been okayed for clothes and skin (in moderation) it has never been meant for consumption. But with its increasing popularity and abundant usage it is showing up in ever greater quantities in our rivers, streams and lakes and it is only a matter of time before it shows up in our drinking water as well.
How The Average American Uses Energy

The average U.S. American consumes 335.9 million BTUs per year, the world per person average is 72.4 million BTUs. 48.2% of US electricity comes from coal. Only 3.7% comes from solar, wind, and geothermal. The average U.S. American uses 441 gallons of gas for their car each year... and more...
DECT Phone Safety

Radiation from cell phones has been getting a lot of press of late but according to the BioInitiative Report cordless phones look to be just as deadly as cell phones when it comes to brain tumors and acoustic neuromas. DECT technology originated in Europe and has since been widely introduced throughout the world. Today more than 800 million DECT systems are in use. The pulsed frequencies of the radiation used in DECT technology are in the microwave band. The ICNIRP is responsible for monitoring and creating guidelines for radiation technologies. The ICNIRP guidelines focus exclusively on high frequency radiation and thermal activity. But many scientists have been pointing out that pulsed microwaves at low frequencies are also cause for alarm.

Pollution:

University of Massachusetts at Amherst’s Political Economy Research Institute, shows Koch Industries as the nation’s 14th largest polluter/emitter. But with their 2013 purchase of Molex, Inc they will slide closer to the top. See detailed emissions breakdowns - www.peri.umass.edu/toxic_index

Koch Industries spent a total of $37.9 million on oil and gas lobbying during 2006 to 2009. www.sourcewatch.org

According to the International Forum on Globalization, Charles and David Koch are America’s single largest source of private money for attacks against environmental protections. They have spent over $643 million to block or rollback legal protections for clean air, clean energy, clean water, and other environmental issues through sketchy scientific research, lobbying lawmakers, contributing to electoral candidates’ campaigns, media manipulation, etc. kochcash.files.wordpress.com

Petroleum coke (a byproduct of tar sands refining) has been irritating numerous residents in both Chicago and Detroit. Koch Carbon is storing enormous quantities of petroleum coke on the banks of Chicago’s Calumet River and Michigan's Detroit River. The ever growing piles await processing, but refineries cannot keep up with the quantity. thinkprogress.org

A routine aerial inspection found Koch Pipeline Co. spilled 400 gallons of crude oil in Texas in late October, 2013.

A Sampling of Environmental Charges Against Koch:

September 2000, a federal grand jury in Corpus Christi, Texas returned a 97-count indictment against Koch Industries Inc., Koch Petroleum Group for violating federal clean air and hazardous waste laws, due to the release of at least 91 metric tons of uncontrolled, untreated carcinogenic benzene. In April 2001, the company reached a $20 million settlement in exchange for admitting to covering up environmental violations at its refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas. www.justice.gov

March 2000, Koch petroleum which operates a refinery in Rosemount, Minn., was sentenced to pay a $6 million criminal fine and pay an additional $2 million in remediation costs. This is the largest federal environmental fine ever paid in Minnesota. Koch admitted that it negligently discharged 200,000 - 600,000 gallons of aviation fuel into a wetland and an adjoining waterway. In addition, their way of recovering the fuel (a year and a half later) destroyed a portion of the surrounding ecosystem and wildlife habitat. In a separate offense, Koch dumped a million gallons of wastewater with high ammonia content on the ground between November 1996 and March 1997 and also increased its flow of wastewater into the Mississippi River on weekends when no one monitored discharges. These actions allowed Koch to circumvent the weekly monitoring and reporting requirements of its wastewater discharge permit. The case was investigated by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division, the FBI and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and was prosecuted by the U. S. Attorney's Office for the District of Minnesota. www.ehso.com

Koch's Sterling butane pipeline had a leak in Lively, Texas, on August 24, 1996. Two teenagers on the way to report the leak drove into the unseen butane cloud, and were killed when the gas exploded and burned. The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that severe external pipeline corrosion was the cause of the failure. www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries

In 1999
, a federal jury found that Koch Industries had stolen oil from government and American Indian lands and had lied about its purchases more than 24,000 times. In May 2001, Koch Industries paid $25 million to the federal government to settle the federal lawsuit that found the company had improperly taken more oil than it had paid for from federal and Indian land. www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries

In January 2000, Koch Pipeline, agreed to a $35 million settlement with the U.S. Justice Department and the State of Texas as fines for the firm's three hundred oil spills (300 million gallons) in Texas and five other states going back to 1990. www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries

In 2006, Flint Hill Resources was fined nearly $16,000 by the EPA for 10 separate violations of the Clean Air Act at its Alaska oil refinery facilities, and required to spend another $60,000 on safety equipment needed to help prevent future violations. yosemite.epa.gov

Climate Change Denial:

A March 2010 Greenpeace report shows that Koch Industry foundations have contributed (2005-2008) nearly $25 million to organizations that oppose clean energy and climate policy. That does not include oil and gas lobbying of $37.9 million. For more info on Koch Industries' funding of Climate Denial Groups -- See GreenPeace's report "Koch Industries Funding the Climate Denial Machine" www.greenpeace.org

In the August, 2010 New York Magazine article 'Covert Operations,' oil tycoon David Koch was quoted as saying, global warming will be a good thing for the planet and will help "support enormously more people because a far greater land area will be available to produce food." www.newyorker.com

Revenue:

Koch Industries brings in $115 billion in revenue annually.
Charles Koch has a net worth of $36 billion.
David Koch also has a net worth of $36 billion. Combined 72 Billion.
Both increased their wealth by 5 billion in 2012. www.forbes.com
Charles Koch has called the recent push to raise the minimum wage 'an obstacle to prosperity'. www.forbes.com

Voting:

Since the Citizen's United decision, corporations can now attempt to influence their employees' votes. The Koch Brothers jumped on that band wagon right away and mailed out lists of Koch supported candidates to their 50,000 employees during the last election. See info and a copy of a recommended election packet at www.thenation.com

The Mercatus Center is a conservative Think Tank at George Mason University’s Arlington campus. It is a university-based research center that makes its research findings available to the media and public policy makers. According to GreenPeace the Mercatus Center has received over 10 million dollars worth of funding from the Koch Brothers. Mercatus also fights environmental regulation, opposes clean energy legislation and lobbys to prevent curbs on industrial pollution. www.greenpeace.org mercatus.org

For those of you who are supportive to the Koch bros, all I ask is look your children in the eyes and imagine the world they will live in, when the toxicity in food and environment become overwhelming and reconsider the impact of the Koch bro's on them. Also, if your employed by them, at some point you will not be and hopefully it will not be because they decide to relocate your position or location, however, they will drop you in a minute. You do not really have the value you think you think you have. For them its all about the money.

It is amazing how some people don't understand what is happening. The robber bearings are back and in force ten times what it was100 years ago. I hope these people are the first to choke on the fumes and pollution these brothers have created.

Calling out the abuses and intents of powerful sources is the responsibility of everyone regardless of political affiliation or belief.
I am for GMO labelling and have no concept of how anyone could be against it, other than the obvious "external" and base motivations.,
Yet I can't seem to find the like coverage devoted to Buffet or Soros interests and machinations that I do the Koch brothers. Recently the Left has adopted the name Koch as their current code word for their knee-jerk "Devil Incarnate" campaign. Seemingly ignoring other major movers and shakers working their will through the age old persuasions.
Such as the leftist Billionaire that recently openly made a specific demand with $100 million attached to it!
We have a serious issue before we actually get to the issues! Political bias!!! I have read several of the comments below and it is quite clear that many follow where they are lead by their chosen and protected masters, yet condemn others that do the same.
Our current level of modern conveniences enables nearly, literally everyone to have access to every shred of man's history and knowledge and yet we have as many as ever that follow and swallow what has been proven time and time and time again to be myth. Progressive taxes, raising the minimum wage, Keynesian style economics, left always over right, right always over left, man made climate change etc, etc, etc.
Right is right and wrong is wrong absolutely regardless of from which side the offense stems or from whom it is supported.
GMO labeling is among the absolute no brainers!! Therefore, whether it's the Koch's or Obama himself, anyone moving to deny us the most basic right of knowing what we are eating is the enemy. Any bias of the slightest amount for any reason in calling out all enemies of the people in every issue is unacceptable and counterproductive.
Our fights to protect ourselves from those man has always had to protect himself from in his societies is seriously handicapped by those that follow a primary flag of one group over or versus another.
As such, if you are still of the belief that man made global warming is real, that raising the minimum wage is a positive, that gays should not have the right to marry, or that both parties currently populating our federal government are not both seriously out of control and moving in the same direction and against us, you are the problem before the problem.

KB writing laws...
Reply #744 on : Thu April 17, 2014, 11:51:49
Now the evil KB are trying to make it ILLEGAL to label foods in the class of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's) as such. They are using their money to get legislation passed making it ILLEGAL to inform the consumer they are buying a GMO product.

From Tom Colicchio:
"A war on your right to know what’s in your food is coming straight to your kitchen table -- courtesy of Monsanto and the Koch Brothers.

New legislation introduced by Representative Mike Pompeo – whose #1 political contributor is the Koch Brothers -- aims to prevent labeling of genetically engineered (GE) food. More than two dozen states have GMO labeling bills pending this year, but this legislation would preempt states from passing any of these bills.

The bill is so dangerous that we've dubbed it the DARK Act -- "Deny American's Right to Know" -- because that's exactly what Monsanto and the Koch Brothers are trying to do by keeping your food ingredients secret."

Jeepers lady. You think we need a certain brand of paper towels to survive? Take the blinders off. These greedy power mongers are fighting with all their billions to make sure the minimum wage is not increased, to hide their many, many environmental illegal activities, and to take away our basic freedoms. Do yourself a favor. Read up on them. Just type in "what's the worst thing the Koch Brothers have done" and then get ready for the ride. It aint pretty.

Reply #742 on : Fri April 11, 2014, 12:20:58
Having spent most of my life in MN I was sickened to read about Koch Brothers pollution of MN wetlands. Boycotting my TP brand won't make any difference to the KB, but it will make me feel better. In this country money equates to power. Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The KB have chosen to absolutely corrupt our political system by trying to buy elections. My little bitty voice says, "not with my money you won't."

I was not familiar with your name, however, Harry Reid has brought the Koch brothers to the limelight. I don't know what you're doing to make Mr Reid so mad, but whatever it is, keep it coming.
Looking at your products, you supply the United States with virtually everything we need to survive.
I'm very happy that you are able to make it possible for us to have these products.

I nearly gagged when I read someone's post that the Koch Bros. have more integrity than our government. Now, I'm not ignorant to the integrity issues within government... It makes me sad to hear our country is full of LEMMINGS.

I will continue to buy their products. I believe they have reached their financial position thru' hard work and persistence. They have created millions of jobs in this country. Just because they are anti-union, the unions have sent word around to the workers to boycott their products. The unions themselves need to be audited. I do not believe they work towards the good of the union people.

Koch Industries has more integrity than anyone on Capitol Hill. Do a little research on the business model and you will see that it makes sense. The same elements that create a successful society, create a successful company. All disclosure, I am employed by a Koch company and have never worked for a more honorable company. They were the only, and I repeat, the only producer of ethanol in the US to oppose continuation of ethanol subsidies. Boycott all you desire, but I for one will continue to support products that provide value to my family and my community.

The Koch brothers are tied for public enemy #1. They are destroying our democracy, our economy, our land, our water, our freedom. They should be tried for crimes against humanity. I can't believe that the politicians are so far up Charles' and David's butts, that they are willing to sell out our nation. Further, I can't believe that US citizens don't get it enough to wage major nationwide rebellion against this.

This is a case of "they didn't built that". They inherited much of this from their father. They didn't create it, he did. They are building on what he did, and expanding it, and trying to control our political process as well. Entitled and arrogant, immoral and mercenary. It is a game for them. We are becoming the United States of Koch.

Capitalism not Monarchy
Reply #733 on : Tue March 25, 2014, 13:24:34
Reading a lot of comments on here, it sounds as if half the people would be happy to give their personal freedoms as citizens just to have a job. Corporations aren't people. Regardless if they employ thousands of people or not, they shouldn't be playing politics. The Koch Brothers don't care about any of you UNLESS you help improve their bottom line. It's all about money for them, and they are interfering with our political system to make more.

All men were created equal, so we should all get an equal say in how our government runs. Now the Koch Brothers have made it legal for them to pressure you in political affiliations and in how you vote. Your vote should count equally to theirs, but since you're not a billionaire, it doesn't.

Wake up, people. We are heading toward a monarchy system where the rich decide everything, and we are slaves. This isn't capitalism within a democracy. No citizen within a republic that wasn't elected by the people should have that much say and power with how the government runs.

They are taking your freedom from you, and you're so blind you are defending them.

They are living the American dream, the dream we all want but can't achieve. I do not hate them but have the highest respect for them because like the parable of the talents in the Holy Bible, they took the talents that were given them and greatly multiplied them just the way God instructs us to do in the Bible. Please don't use lobby money in DC as a barometer of just causes. Long live the Koch Brothers and their promotion of commerce and working within the parameters of our legal system. All they do is create opportunities for other people to live well, pay taxes and contribute, not suck resources. I'm looking to transfer my work skills to one of their corporations now just to continue the good work that they do and services that they provide.

It would be helpful to see a list of alternative (non-Koch) paper products.

The Koch Bros attempt to take over the country for their own purposes will finally fail when the Tea Party finds out that Mr. Clean and the Brawny Paper Towel guy are secretly married.

I use Koch products every day and am proud of the fact that they employ over 70,000 people who contribute to the tax rolls and pay for food stamps and aid for people who do not possess jobs.

It would really help if we could print out this list. And thank you to the person who mentioned the Costco brand was Kohl brothers.

I forgot to put my name in last post. Anyway, I'm going to hunt down more Koch Brothers products (that should be easy) and add them to my list of things I am no longer going to buy.

I will not knowingly purchase anything they have a monetary interest in. If they spent $1 for every billion seconds, they wouldn't chew through a billion dollars until four years before the Challenger disaster. How much damn money do you bastards need?

Trying to kill Obamacare
Reply #710 on : Tue December 17, 2013, 18:18:01
First, I want to thank Inspiration Green for all the work you have done to inform us of the magnitude of treachery the kochs have eviscerated, and are still eviserating, our Nation.
I have uncovered some info myself. I have found that the one and only reason Chuck & Dave (the hottest bags of monkey scat on Earth) are in terror of ACA is: each and every person that lives, or lived, in areas where their products are produced, have been used or are presently used, will now have the ability to go to doctors with pre-existing conditions.
The fallout is shredding them. They are like wounded animals forced into a small space terrorized by the person on the other end of the whip, cowering them. As well they should!
It is certain that when a multitude of certain illnesses, determined to be concentrated in all the places owned and operated by the kochboys, the CDC, EPA, OSHA & every medical university on the planet will converge on the areas and tear the company apart. As well they should!
This is why the boys are spending themselves into the poorhouse trying to get ACA killed and buried so far underground it will never see the light of day, for eternity.
I think these cowards have underestimated those of us with I.Q.s over 80 and our ability to make our country healthy and happy again. And I know they didn’t see the Pope coming out and biting their nasty old asses! Bonus!

I've worked for several chemical companies over the years, and Koch Industries was the most aggressive in enforcing environmental compliance. I saw 2 individuals with 50 years experience in the company fired on the spot merely because they disagreed with a certain policy. In any industrial endeavor there's going to be some mishaps, but I can assure you with Koch it isn't because of a lack of compliance.

Owners of America
Reply #708 on : Wed December 04, 2013, 09:04:10
I knew they owned a lot of companies, but I had no idea that they do indeed "own America" and they have bought Congress, and through their "non-profit" ALEC they now write the laws. I guess they really are the rulers of America and will soon proclaim their ownership. They are controlling the Supreme Court, The House and Senate, states especially Wisconsin with Walker doing their every command. This came about because over the past 30 years Congress has completely nullified the push in the 60's to control monopolies. Now we see just how vital that was and I fear it is too late to do anything about these "owners of America".
Maybe emigrate to a more "civilized" country!

Soon they will cover the land with oil leaks that each state, not their company, will have to bear the brunt of the cost to clean up. Soon they will contaminate the air and the waters of our country but they will remain rich. Imagine if men like this cared about protecting the environment, how wonderfully their money could be used for development and preservation of what is healthy. These are not good men. They are, what republicans would consider, good businessmen.

Why not boycott the Supermarkets and Hardware stores that carry Koch products.
Boycott Kroger, Home Depot, and Lowe's for example.

You can also buy generic rather than Georgia-pacific brands. Buy generic paper towels rather than Brawny for example.

NO WONDER THEY ( THE KOCH BROTHERS) ARE SO TWISTED. THEIR FATHER BELIEVED:
He claimed that the Democratic and Republican Parties were infiltrated by the Communist Party, and he supported Mussolini's suppression of communists. He wrote that "The colored man looms large in the Communist plan to take over America," and that public welfare was a secret plot to attract rural blacks and Puerto Ricans to Eastern cities to vote for Communist causes and "getting a vicious race war started."[16]

If our politicians were not for sale then Koch Industries would have no influence, but that is the game that the politicians play and we get mad at the individuals who have the money to play. 50,000 employees is a big economic boost to our economy if they were as evil as people say they are, they would have robots doing all the work by now. I will join the boycott if anyone can prove to me that 1 year or 1 month or even 1 day, hour, minute or second has been taken from the earths future and show me how much time we have left. When I was a kid it was global cooling now it's global warming but the earth keeps chugging along.

The Mafia, motorcycle clubs, Russian Mafia, and many other criminal organizations work very hard for what they have, and many of their leaders are brilliant. Are you fans of theirs too?

The criticisms of the Koch suckers are that they are using this wealth to destroy the ecology, oppress the American people, bribe congress on a large scale, and essentially purchase the rights to rule the US as a dictatorship. Their gambit in congress of late is just the tip of the iceberg. Admiring hard work and intelligence is one thing, supporting such individuals in committing crimes on a vast scale is something different entirely.

Isn't it nice to know that two 'men' who made so much money in the United States hate their country so much? Such evil, malevolent, vile, greedy, avaricious, fascist traitors.

Questions:
$100 B/yr revenue; how much of that is profit?
How much do they pay in taxes (fed, state)?
Does it matter how much they make as long as they contribute proportionately to building and maintaining national infrastructure (not just what they use for their factories, refineries, etc.), the Navy that protects their commerce, the health and well being of our people and the education of future generations to serve our communties and country?
Also, do they give any reason why they shouldn't clean up after themselves without having to be prosecuted and hauled into court?

SSK wrote, "What is clear to me when reading many of these comments is that most of the people "Complaining" or wanting to "Boycott" this company and the extremely intelligent men who run it is that they are very UN-intelligent.."

Your feeble insult of people of conscience is typical of a person without ethics or morals. You probably work for the Koch Brothers.

The Koch brothers may be smart or maybe just lucky, but who cares? What is a concern is they use their wealth to achieve their self-serving ends at great cost to our society.
