squared bamboo

Square Bamboo.

Grown in west-central Alabama by retired Anglican Bishop, Edward Whatley who read an article which stated that those who practice the Shinto religion in Japan have a single piece of square bamboo in their prayer corner.

Research and reading led Bishop Whatley to discover that the Japanese pioneered the technique of squaring bamboo centuries ago, but they generally stopped making it in the 1920's.  Nowhere online or in books could he find anyone who currently squares bamboo. Hence, he set out on a journey to form his own. A Japanese friend took an interest in his project and assisted Bishop Whatley in locating the formula.

So now Bishop Whatley "squares" his own bamboo. He has found that Giant Henon Gray and Vivax, of the 8 varieties he grows, work best, though he is also experimenting with black bamboo (P. nigra).

Last year he built and set out over 100  frames. This season he will set out some 200 or more frames, with each frame being used 2 or 3 times in the season. Bishop Whatley also makes Harajuku lights and "crooked hiking sticks". For inquiries: [email protected]

Biologists are saying that giant timber bamboo sequesters more carbon dioxide than any other plant...

Bamboo's Age:

Less than 30 days - good for eating
6-9 months for baskets
2-3 years for bamboo boards or laminations
3-6 years for construction
After 6 years bamboo gradually loses strength...

For long life, bamboo needs to have its starch content reduced. This is accomplished by first air drying, and then by soaking the poles in water for a few weeks. See: Spanish:

Bamboo Chairs

WOW!!! What an incredible designs, the bamboo chairs in particular blew me away, and the whole bamboo kitchen in Indonesia... I love Bamboo, anything, from bamboo lounge chairs to coffee tables. Bamboo also fits into the beach theme interior design, rustic look etc. etc. But it's also good for the 1960s hippie look, like these lounge bamboo chairs:

which would look amazing with white & orange bold graphic print cushions, what a statement addition to your room!

I am highly impressed by bamboo products on your website. I am in South Africa and like to find out if plans for the furniture are available or is there copy right on them. Bamboo growing is just starting in South Africa and I am interested in using the product for making furniture.

Klinker or clinker bricks were overcooked rejects, a product of intense and smokey coal-fired kilns. They were considered a waste product until early Craftsman builders found their sculptural architectural merits.

Beautiful buildings but the thought of birds flying into the glass is dreadful, so all large panes of mirror should have a deterrent, like a hawk cut-out or strips of ribbon hanging in front. Nesting season would be a particularly problematic time.
