Green Vacuums!

Electrolux has unveiled five vacuum cleaners made from plastic waste collected from the world’s oceans! Really! They have collected plastic from four different seas and oceans, washed and cut up the plastic and placed the debris in a vacuum cleaner body mold. And yes, they work. This marks the next phase of the Vac from the Sea initiative, launched by Electrolux earlier this year, with the aim of raising awareness about ocean plastic waste and inspiring consumers and industry to increase recycling efforts. UNFORTUNATELY, as these models are very labor intensive and costly to build they are not publicaly available for sale. But one will be auctioned and the money used for research.

Electrolux AB has also launched a 'Green Range' of vacuums that are made from 55-70% recycled plastics. UltraOne Green, for example, contains 70% recycled plastics and no Polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Electrolux Green Range saves up to 50% energy compared with an average 2000W cleaner. These are for sale, but currently only in Europe. Thank you Electrolux for helping to bring awareness and lets hope we all take further steps to get the plastics out of the oceans...

Electrolux Green Range saves up to 50% energy compared with an average 2000W cleaner, which translates to 0,5 – 1 W less energy consumption per hour of usage. If a consumer uses a green Electrolux cleaner for ten years, he or she would save enough energy to reduce CO2 emissions by 320 kg – which is enough to drive a car 1,918 kilometers.
