Sea Ice Extent- 2009 saw the third smallest Arctic ice sheet-
only 2008 and the record breaking 2007 were smaller...
According to meteorologist Anthony Watts we only missed the 2005 minimum by
65,312 sq km which is about one days worth of melt during melt season.

Could the lack of sunspots be the cause of our cool summer?
During this past July through August, we had 51 consecutive days pass without a single sun
spot. That is one day short of tying the record of 52 spotless days in the early 1900s.

From the Topeka-Capital Journal: "A sunspot, Dr. Perry explains, is a location on the sun's
surface that is cooler than the surrounding area. When there are more sunspots, the sun's
surface becomes more dynamic and an opposite effect takes place, releasing more heat and
energy when other parts of the sun become hotter." Many believe we are entering into a grand
minimum, and that might cool us down for a few years...

Although recently, as you can see above- some spots are starting to appear. For perspective,
each of those spots is the size of planet earth.
